Noted economist Isher Judge Ahluwalia passes away at 74

New Delhi: Dr. Isher Judge Ahluwalia, a renowned economist and Padma Bhushan awardee, who had also worked extensively on issues related to urbanisation and education, breathed her last on Saturday.

The 74 year old fondly known as Isher among her colleagues and friends, was married to former Deputy Chairman of the erstwhile Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia. She was battling cancer since last ten months.

Ahluwalia's demise comes after she stepped down from the chairpersonship of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) in August.

She is also credited with transforming ICRIER into a research institution to reckon with.

Politicians and businessmen paid tribute to the economist following her demise.

She was conferred Padma Bhushan by the President of India in 2009 for her services in the field of education and literature and economic.

Dr Ahluwalia had also curated and chaired the ICRIER-India Habitat Centre 'Conversations on Urbanisation' and had gone on to lead a high-level expert group on urban infrastructure and services for the Centre.
