Erode, Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswami on Wednesday said, about 400 students from government schools in Tamil Nadu will get medical college seats under the 7.5 percent quota.

With the approval of Governor Banwarilal Purohit, following what the opposition parties called much delay, the state government released a GO to enforce the quota regime for the current academic year 2020-21.

The Chief Minister said the government launched the quota after he was 'moved' by the plight of these students unable to pursue medical education.

"Being a student in a government school, I realized their plight and decided to improve their prospects in pursuing higher education, especially in the medical field. Hence, my government enacted the GO on 7.5 percent (horizontal) quota," Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami said.

He said the quota would help government school students get 405 seats - 313 MBBS and 92 BDS seats.

CM K Palaniswami said, "Ours is a government that fulfills the aspirations of the poor. My government, through the quota, has shown that even government school students can become medical doctors. This will help them serve poor people with dedication,"

The chief minister by handing over the seat allotment provided 18 students with stethoscopes and aprons.

Apart from that he also declared post-matric scholarships and educational assistance to the government schools students including those run by municipalities, panchayats, and corporations, welfare schools for AdiDravidar and tribals, among others.
