Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Visit Bhutan In August

A Correspondent

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan on August 17 and 18 as his first neighbourhood destination after assuming charge as Prime Minister for the second consecutive term. In fact this will be the first visit of Modi to Bhutan since the China-India military face-off in 2017 at Doklam that was triggered by an intrusion by Chinese troops into territory.

This is strategically is also very important as China, in recent years, has been trying to woo Bhutan, seeking to open an embassy in the country, which has diplomatic missions from India, Bangladesh and Kuwait.

New Delhi and Thimphu are likely to sign four to five memorandum of understanding (MoU)during Modi’s visit and some major announcements are expected. Bhutan was the first country Modi visited after becoming Prime Minister in 2014.

After winning the 2019 elections, Narendra Modi invited leaders of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, a South and Southeast Asian economic grouping, for his swearing in on 30 May.
