MYANMAR : The Junta announced a riot that broke at a Myanmar prison, west of Yangon. It is well known fact that Myanmar is surviving under a chaotic shell ever since Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government was overturned in a military coup back in 2021, February. 

This had led to the end of southeast Asian nation's era of democracy. The riot at the prison located in Pathein occurred after few guards seized a mobile from a prisoner and took punitive action. 

The episode took place on the Thursday night, as informed by the Junta. A number of 70 prisoners went all violent and damaged properties of the cells on Friday. 

The junta further stated that, inmates attacked the security guards with the help of sticks, bricks and pieces of cement. The concerned authorities tried to manage the situation and bring the scenario under control, however, failed miserably.

The prisoners did not stop as a result of which the department had to opt for force. According to the statement of junta, authorities shot bullets on air to disperse the crowd and peace out the situation.

During the process, one of the prisoners got shot and died. Along with that, 63 prisoners were injured amidst the fight. Nine guards and two police officials also suffered wounds during the sudden violent occurrence.

As per local media, the person who got killed was under custody on terrorism charges and was a political prisoner.

A week prior to this incident, junta declared release of 7,000 prisoners to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Myanmar's independence from the British rule.

Human Rights Watch claims that, Myanmar prisons are too harsh in terms of the conditions and environment. They body accused the prison authorities for allegedly using power to torture the inmates.
