"Said nothing sexist about Anushka": Sunil Gavaskar issues clarification on Virat jibe

Dubai: After severe backlash, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has issued a clarification about his jibe directed at Virat Kohli, in which he brought up Anushka Sharma. Gavaskar, issuing his clarification via a video, said that he did not make any "sexist" remark.

After Kolhi's dismal showing in his latest outing in the IPL, Gavaskar had remarked that during the coronavirus induced lockdown, Virat must only have practiced with Anishka, his wife. Gavaskar was apparently referring to a video that surfaced on the internet in which the couple is seen playing cricket.

The controversy erupted after Gavaskar said, "lockdown tha to inhone sirf Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki hai," (during the lockdown, he must have practiced on Anushka's bowling only).

Gavaskar said that he based his remark on what he had seen on social media. "Anushka was bowling in their building compound. I have now used any other word. Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist?" Gavaskar says in his clarification. He urged the Indian skipper to once again go through the footage of the match and hear what he actually said. "Where did I blame her?" he asked.

Gavaskar further went on to say that people have twisted his words and put words in his mouth. "Gavaskar's jibe caused a furor on social media, with netizens criticizing the cricket legend for his "sexist remark."

After the controvery erupted, Anushka took to Instagram to give the little master a piece of her mind. In a strongly-worded post, the 'PK' actor slammed Gavaskar for bringing up her name during cricket commentary.

Taking a dig at Sunil Gavaskar, she also made it clear that she is fed of being dragged into cricket whenever her husband Viral fails to perform in cricket.
