New Delhi: The government will now expedite the policy for the mandatory installation of six airbags in all passenger vehicles.

As per the reports, now the government is mulling to expedite the mandatory installation of four more airbags for the rear seat passengers.

Notably, last year, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari had appealed to carmakers to compulsorily provide a minimum of six airbags across all variants and segments of the vehicle.

Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter on 23 August 2021, he had said, "In the interest of passenger safety, I have also appealed to all private vehicle manufacturers to compulsorily provide a minimum of six airbags across all variants and segments of the vehicle."

However, providing four extra airbags will definitely increase the price and as per the media reports, it can go up from Rs 9,000 to Rs 10,000.

Presently, cars have two airbags for the passengers in the front seats-the driver and the passenger alongside.

As per the new rules which came into force on January 1, all the vehicles manufactured in India have two airbags installed for the front row co-passengers.
