New Delhi: Anguished and deeply hurt by the developments of Sunday in Rajya Sabha and the manner in which the MPs of Upper House behaved, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha decided to keep a fast today.

In his letter to Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Venkaiah Naidu, Singh expressed his anguish over the "humiliating conduct" of opposition leaders during the Sunday proceedings of the House while taking up the farming bills. Singh said he hoped that this decision to fast would inspire a feeling of "self-purification" in them.

The deputy chairperson said the MPs tried to frighten the Chair and "tore every norm and convention of the House to shreds".

Singh further wrote that he has been mentally disturbed by whatever happened and he could not sleep for the past couple of nights.

The sit-in protest continued for the second day today and when the Deputy Chairman Singh served tea and snacks to the agitating MPs, they did not accept.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar announced that he too would be observing a day-long fast to protest against the suspension of the MPs.
