From a Correspondent

Goalpara, July 3: The 10-hour Goalpara district bandh called by the local committee of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Monday was peaceful and there was no report of any untoward incident.

During the bandh period, the supporters of the organization came out in various places and burnt tyres and shouted slogans demanding justice in the case of police firing on Friday which led to the death of a youth. Both long and short distance vehicles remained off the road and commercial establishments remained closed. Hundreds of AAMSU activists in Krishi area blocked the NH-37 which resulted in a chaotic situation as vehicles queued on the highway. However, police successfully controlled the situation and no untoward incident occurred. The police also took three protesters into custody. They were later released.
