Dibrugarh: The first phase of the Lok Sabha elections kicked off here on Thursday amidst much anticipation and excitement. As per sources, the voting percentage in 13th Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency was 71 per cent with scores of voters coming out to exercise their franchise.

Reflecting the vibrant democratic culture that India is widely famous for, voters ranging from young adults to octogenarian citizens, all took active participation in the great festival of India, as touted by the Election Commission of India. Exiting the polling booth at Banisadan High School near KP Road in a seemingly satisfactory mood after casting his vote, Tanuj Gautam told The Sentinel, “I am always passionate about India’s diversity. For me, the country has managed to make its own place within the global community of nations because of its heterogeneous society, cultures and lifestyles. Therefore, it’s extremely important to preserve this nature of India, come what may. Otherwise, we risk losing a lot! And I expect the forthcoming government to uphold this life-giving force of pluralism.”

A Central Government pensioner in his 70s, Tapadhir Dutta, said after exercising his franchise, “My locality, known as Match Factory in common parlance, has seen many cases of thefts of late. I would suggest the new government to consider generating employment for such people; for if given a better choice, these strayed youths will definitely choose a path of dignity. I would also want my local MP to pay attention to urban infrastructure like street lightning.”
