153rd death anniversary of Kiang Nongbah observed

SHILLONG, Dec 30: The legendary freedom fighter U Kiang ngbah was today remembered by the Sein Raij Niamtre, Shillong commemorating his 153rd death anniversary at U Soso Tham auditorium in the city.

It may be mentioned that, U Kiang ngbah was born to Ka Rimai ngbah at Tpeppale in Jowai. The exact date of his birth is not known but it is said that he was a child at the time when the British annexed the Jaintia Kingdom in 1835.

Addressing the 153rd death anniversary of U Kiang ngbah, Congress MP from Meghalaya Vincent H Pala said, “Every year on this day we use to remember U Kiang ngbah our great freedom fighter at Khliehriat and I’m happy that even in Shillong such a programme is being held to remember this great man who fought bravely against the British to try and stop their advances into our hills.”

He said the spirit of Kiang ngbah to never give up despite facing a formidable enemy will live on for many years.

Meanwhile, the Khasi Students Union (KSU) also observed the 153rd death anniversary of U Kiang Nongbah at the busy civil point junction here on Wednesday.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem today said, “There are many obstacles and issues face by our youths today even though various NGOs and organization including political leaders have come forward to addressed these issues, just like U Kiang ngbah stood for his people 153 years before.
