158 villages in Darrang affected by flood water

MANGALDAI: Following the breach of the embankment of River Noa in the Nagarbahi area near Mangaldai, the first wave of flood has created havoc even in several areas of Mangaldai town and for the first time in the district headquarters town, the SDRF men were compelled to undertake rescue operation in Milanpur area and part of ward no. 10.

The rising flood water of River Noa has submerged the areas of Milanpur up to waist deep causing damage to property. Upahupara near Mangaldai College has also been affected by the flood. The Mangaldai Mazikuchi Road and MPK Road have been submerged under flood water in several places while the MB Road at Kalaigaon has also been affected.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulen Sarma, a total population of 1,74,708 of 158 villages has been affected by the flood in the district while the administration has opened up five relief camps to provide shelter to about 3,000 flood-affected persons. The administration has also provided relief materials to the flood-affected villagers while the veterinary department has been providing cattle feed to domestic animals. Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das has been seen supervising the relief and rescue operations and he also visited the affected areas.
