Kokrajhar, April 19: The 159th birth anniversary of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma, the reformer of the Bodos, was observed by Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Trust (GKBT) with a two-day programme at Bodoland University (BU) and it concluded on Thursday. The birth anniversary  programme of Gurudev included seminar on the contributions of Gurudev to the Bodo society.  The Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Trust (GKBT) was founded in 2008 with various objectives and with special care to follow and focus the ideological work of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma. Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma, who was born on April 18, 1960, had a speculative mission to work towards the all-round development of the Bodos. He began his work by preaching Brahma Dharma amongst the Bodos in 1906. Under the leadership of Gurudev Kalicharan, the Bodos were benefited immensely.

Brahma was used as surname in 1912, Brahma company was set up in 1912, Golapara district Bodo Chatra Sannmilan was formed in 1919 and Boro Mahasannimlan was observed in 1951. Besides, Farmers’Association was formed in 1923, weaving centre was set up in 1925, village development committee was formed in 1925 while Boro Mahila Sanmilan was formed in 1925.

A memorandum was submitted to the Simon Commission in 1929 led by Brahma for the safety and existence of the Bodos.  Boros Pandulipi was written in 1934 under his initiative and Kalicharan Brahma was given the titled ‘Gurudev’ in the year 1905 because of his spiritual philosophy and strength. Gurudev was not only the spiritual leader but a political, social, cultural, economic and educational revolutionist. He died on May 8, 1938.

The secretary of the GKBT, Dr. Ajit Boro said the Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Trust had an objective to carry on his mission by upgrading and organizing various activities. Its main objective was spreading and developing the philosophy of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma.

Boro said the trust had started conferring the Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Award from this year. This award is being conferred for outstanding personality and remarkable work and contribution in the Brahma Dharma Philosophy of Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma. This award carries a citation, a memento, aronai, endi sowl, and cash Rs 50,000. As part of the programme, the seminar  on the topic ‘Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma: The multifaceted personality’ was inaugurated by Dr. Sekhar Brahma, Registrar of Bodoland University, and Dr. Kameswar Brahma, Padmashree awardee, gave the keynote address on Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma. The Gurudev Kalicharan Brahma Trust gave the award to Jageswar Brahma, chief preacher of Brahma Dharma Prasar Sangshad.
