19 couples in nuptial bond at Ga Bibaha

Silchar, Feb 4: 19 couples tied their nuptial knots in a mass wedding ceremony or Ga Bibaha organized by the Silchar chapter of Lions Club and Lioness Club. It was the 14th edition of such mass wedding, a sigture project of Lions Club of Silchar which earned laurels from the civil society. The ceremonial mass wedding was held at Deshabhakta Tarun Ram Phookan HS School Compound, Sant Tulsi Das Marg, PWD road, here on Sunday. The couples tied the knot amid Vedic hymns and other rituals. Different social organizations and some individuals also offered clothing, imitation sets, cosmetic items, steel and aluminum utensils, miscellaneous food and bedding items. Couples mostly from fincially weaker section of the society were also provided fincial help by social organizations and individuals.

Talking to The Sentinel, Lion Amar th Khandelwal, project chairman, said that the main objective behind organizing such ceremony is to extend help to the people belonging to fincially weaker sections of the society. He expressed his gratitude to different organizations and individuals for extending their help and cooperation to make the event successful. He said that since its inception in the year 2004 till this date, 350 couples have been a part of this ceremony of its kind. Last year, 34 couples tied their knots at a similar mass wedding ceremony organized by the Club.

 “We are not bothered at the decrease in number of couples. We started our holistic journey with just 6 couples,” Lion Amar th Khandelwal added to say. After all the ceremony, a cultural show for the newlywed couples was held for their entertainment. Renowned artistes of Barak Valley, Bidhan Laskar and Manjushree Das, kept them enthralled. The programme also included sumptuous feast for more than 800 persons. The daylong programme was live telecast by local television channels.

 Some other salient service activities of the Club include Lions Eye Hospital, improvised cremation pyre, adoption of village, monthly medical camp, heart and diabetes check up, felicitation of senior citizens, meritorious students, youth orientation programme as well as organization of half marathon race. The auspicious occasion was graced by the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Dr S Lakshman and others.
