1984 riot convict Sajjan Kumar gets life imprisonment!

Guwahati: At a time when Congress has done remarkably well in the recently held Assembly elections in five states of the country and is enjoying a progress, another blow has hit the party with Congress leader Sajjan Kumar being found guilty and sentenced to life in jail by the Delhi High Court. The Congress leader was accused and is found guilty for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Notably, Sajjan Kumar was convicted for killing five members of a family in Raj Nagar in Delhi which later triggered a big riot in 1984. It was right then only, the Congress leader was asked to surrender by December 31 and restricted from leaving the city.

The Delhi High Court states, "It is important to assure the victims that despite the challenges truth will prevail." The court even specially mentioned the courage of Jagdish Kaur, the victim who fought so long seeking justice for him and punishment against Sajjan Kumar. The court later added, "The aftershock of those atrocities is still being felt."

The riot triggered by this killing led to the death of at least 3,000 another people who were killed by mobs. The assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards was the biggest incident of the year which was later followed by the massive mass riot.

There were many survivors and witnesses who gave accounts of the Congress leaders leading mobs that targeted Sikhs. Among other Congress leaders, Sajjan Kumar was the first top leader to be convicted.

The very news of life imprisonment verdict for the main culprit behind the 1984 riot has cheered the riot survivors and other opposition parties of the country and says that this shows the win of democracy and justice even though it took 34 long years.
