2 arrested for looting bank official

Tura, Oct 17: Meghalaya Police on Tuesday arrested two persons, who had allegedly stolen Rs 25 lakh from a bank official in Tura.

The duo had looted Richard Marak while he was repairing the punctured tyre of his vehicle (ML-08B 2526) in front of Tura Post Office, near the SBI main branch of West Garo Hills around 2:55 pm.

The police recovered the stolen amount of Rs 25 lakh from the duo who were arrested from Phulbari town, about 106 km from Tura in West Garo Hills. 

Following the complaint filed by Marak, who works at Gambegre SBI branch, the police immediate began its raid across West Garo Hills.

The police said their action began with basic lead of two people riding a black motorbike (Bajaj Pulsar) with two bags seen proceeding towards Tura Super Market and one of them wearing a black t-shirt while the other wearing a blue t-shirt.

“We formed teams, including ka teams headed by gazetted officers and all the police stations were alerted to intercept the bike that was proceeding towards Garobadha. Also all neighbouring districts along the Assam-Meghalaya were informed,” West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Raghuvendra Kumar said. 

He said based on “credible source information” all teams of the police were instructed to intercept the bike in which two persons were riding along with the bag.

“After a thorough search was conducted and based on credible source information and corroborated technical inputs, the two persons were arrested from one passenger boat that was proceeding from Phulbari to Dhubri in the middle of Jhinjiram river on Meghalaya side,” said Kumar.  

The bike (AS01DE 9083) that was used to commit the crime was also recovered.

The accused have been identified as Anurag Singh (27) from lslampur in West Bengal, while the other is a juvenile.
