2 Dead and 12 Critically Injured in Howrah Stampede

A heavy rush of passengers on a footbridge at Santragachhi junction in Howrah led to the death of two people due to stampede along with at least 12 others were critically injured. The major and minor injured people are taken for immediate medical care while the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reaches the spot and announces a compensation of Rs. Five lakh for the deceased and Rs one lakh for the critically injured ones.

Expressing her reaction on the stampede issue, Banerjee said, "Two people are dead in the incident. There should be an investigation, as I feel that there has been negligence on the part of railways." She also went vocal against the Railways and asked for an investigation as to who is responsible for the mishap. Relating the Amritsar tragedy as well, the Bengal Cm added, "Coordination gap is present in Railways. This needs to be fixed so the safety and security is not compromised. I have been a railway minister. Safety and security cannot be compromised. Railways is the lifeline of the nation. So many people died in Amritsar a few days ago. Who is responsible?"

Banerjee condoled at the death of the two people due to the sudden stampede. While speaking to the media she said, "Railways must do their own probe. What's happening in Amritsar. What's happening in the country. I am not blaming railways but they can't shy away from their own responsibility. We will do our own probe. We are compensating the family of the deceased and the injured. We are probing the matter."
