30 people suffer food poisoning, bakery under scanner

Hamren, Oct 12: A popular bakery in Diphu town (Roy Bakery) is under the scanner after 30 persons suffered from food poisoning on Wednesday after consuming scks ordered from the bakery.

Asheweng Rengma, resident of Rengma, Diphu, had orders food packages from the bakery during a prayer service at his residence on Wednesday evening. Those who attended the prayer service were given packed sandwiches ordered from the bakery. After eating the sandwiches, they complained of stomach ache, high fever and inflammation.

Around 30 people, including children, were admitted in Diphu Civil Hospital for treatment. Leaders of Karbi Students Association (KSA), United Karbi Students Association (UKSA) Karbi Student and Youth Association (KSYA), Greater Guwahati Student Association (GGKSA) and Karbi Farmer Association (KFA) held a discussion with the bakery owner Torid Roy and slammed him for hiring people in his bakery who allegedly had no training or certificate from reputed hotels or catering institutes.

The leaders demanded an inquiry into the incident and an FIR has been lodged by the leaders at Diphu Police Station. Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan and KAAC EMs Roton Teron and Khonsing Rongpi visited the bakery and also the Diphu Civil Hospital to meet the people who are undergoing treatment.

The organizations also demanded that the bakery should be closed down until the enquiry is completed, cancelation of trading licence of the bakery, suspension of the Food Inspector by KAAC immediately, medical expenses of the affected people should be borne by the bakery owner and immediate arrest of the guilty on attempt to murder, said the leader at a press meet on Thursday.
