377 accidents in 3 days

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 16: Assam seems to have got its traditional Rongali Bihu spirit in this spring –but not for nothing. The State has to pay a heavy price this in the form of accidents, including some fatal ones, from April 13-15 this year.
What worries those at the helm of affairs is that the number (377) of such accidents in just three days this year exceeds its corresponding figure (245) in the corresponding three days in 2017 by 132.
According Mrityunjay 108 Emergency Service, it served as many as 101 road traffic accident cases, including nine in Kamrup(M), in the State on April 13 this year against 62 it had served on April 13, 2017. April 13 this year was the Uruka day in the State. The day this year saw as many as 39 more road traffic accident cases than last year to have been served by Mrityunjay 108 Emergency Service.
April 14 this year was the day of Goru Bihu which is celebrated with all enthusiasm in the State. However, Mrityunjay 108 Emergency Service had to serve as many as 129 road traffic accident cases, including ten in Kamrup (M), on that day this year against 87 such cases on the corresponding day in 2017. The day saw at least 42 more such cases this year than what it was on the corresponding day in 2017.
On the day of Manu Bihu i.e. on April 15 this year Mrityunjay 108 Emergency Service had to attend as many as 147 road traffic accident cases in the State, including ten in Kamrup (M), against 96 such cases it had attended on the corresponding day in 2017. The day this year saw 51 more cases of accidents than what it was during the same day in 2017.
It is crystal clear that Bihu is celebrated with traditional and cultural fervour, but not without paying a cost. Every year the State has to pay a huge cost in the form of accidents for such celebrations. Can revelry – the root cause of all such accidents – be detached from such celebrations so as to save such loss of life and wealth?
