5 Dies as Over-crowded bus Fell into Canal in West Bengal, 22 others Injured

An over-crowded bus that fell into a shallow canal at Haripal in Hooghly district of West Bengal led to the death of five people with 22 others injured. The accident took place on Tuesday morning. There were around 50 passengers on the bus.

Sukesh Kumar Jain, Hooghly district police superintendent, said, “The injured persons have already been rushed to a local hospital. The condition of four injured is quite critical.” Jain further added that none of the dead people is identified.

The incident took place at around 7.30 in the morning.

Of the five deaths due to the accident, four died on-the-spot and the other died on the way to the hospital.

District police and disaster management personnel reached the site of the accident for the rescue of the passengers who remained trapped in the bus following the accident. The rescue team, along with the local people, had to break the glass windows of the bus in order to bring the trapped passengers out.

Jain also added, “We are not sure about why the accident happened. It might be because of over speeding following which the driver lost control or maybe because of any technical problems in the vehicle. Investigation in on.”
