SHILLONG: There are 5,894 vacancies in 48 government departments of the State, the Meghalaya Assembly was informed on Thursday.

Replying during the Question Hour, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said out of the 5,894 vacancies, 1,894 vacant posts in the various departments have been intimated to the various recruiting agencies like the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC), District Selection Committees (DCS) and in certain cases to the Secretariat Administration Department (SAD).

Congress legislator from Umroi, George B Lyngdoh asked whether the government would go for a special review so that the posts are filled as soon as possible.

On the issue of delay in recruitment to the vacant posts, Conrad said the MPSC and the DSCs have been continuously advertising and conducting examinations to the various vacant posts.

“The process does take time and certain procedures have to be followed and many departments have to be catered to,” the Chief Minister said.

He also said that the departments where there are vacancies and the State Government from time to time send letters to the MPSC asking them to take necessary actions so that posts are filed at the earliest.

The Police Department has the highest number of vacancies with 1,962 posts, the Education Department has 1,370 vacant posts and the health department 329 vacant posts.
