6 Labourers Crushed to Death in a Rice Mill Wall Collapse in Fatehgarh Sahib

Guwahati: 6 labourers got crushed to death in a shocking incident of a wall collapse in an under-construction rice-sheller. The incident took place at Lakhanpur village in Khamano sub-division of Fatehgarh Sahib district at around 10 in the morning. 15 labourers were already working at the site of the collapse and 11 of them were affected by the sudden fall of the debris.

An immediate preliminary investigation conducted at the site revealed that the incident tok place due to the use of poor quality material in construction.

Fatehgarh Sahib DC Shivdular Singh Dhillon, who immediately visited the spot accompanied by SSP Alka Meena, said, “Four labourers were killed on the spot while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.”

The six deceased people are identified as Jagjit Singh and Manjit Singh- residents of Lakhanpur village; Premshawar - a migrant from Bihar, Raghvir Singh of Farour village and Ranvir Singh and Harpreet Singh- residents of Dhuri.

Due to the sudden fall of the rice mill wall, it was impossible for the workers to think of an escape and as a result, almost all of them got crushed under the debris. With six of them being crushed to death on the spot, some of them are in extremely critical condition. Five such critical workers who are severely injured in the collapse are being immediately rushed to Khamano hospital first and then to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector Sector 32.

It took about three hours for the rescue team to conduct the rescue operations and find the five critically injured people out. Khamano sub-divisional magistrate Paramjit Singh SHO Navdeep Singh supervised the rescue operations at the collapse site.

Further, strict actions against the owners of rice mill are being demanded by the Bassi Pathana MLA Gurpreet Singh.
