Shillong, June 13: The Border Security Force in its anti-smuggling drive along the international border has been foiling attempts by smugglers every now and again by making seizures. Once again, acting swiftly on information on smuggling of cattle in areas like Muktapur, Nayabazar and OP Shella, East Khasi Hills and Sanghat in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, the BSF troops seized 65 number of cattle while being smuggled to Bangladesh on June 12. The seized cattle, valued at Rs 11 lakh, were being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. While such smuggling attempts were generally made through the unfenced areas, such attempts were foiled by the BSF. The result being that the smugglers tried to smuggle cattle through fenced areas by breaching the border fence on several occasions. “Still there are many unplugged gaps for which more joint efforts are required to be taken with other sister agencies to curb the menace” said UK Nayal, DIG/PRO BSF Frontier Meghalaya. Over the last seven days, the BSF seized over 200 cattle, and contraband items worth over Rs 47 lakh as per an official communique.
