72% Vote in Final Phase of Rural Poll Amid Incidents

GUWAHATI: The second and final phase of the panchayat poll was concluded on Sunday amid reports of sporadic incidents, anomalies in electoral rolls and misprinting of symbols in ballot papers. According to the State Election Commission, the voters’ turnout has been put at 72 per cent. The turnout may go up as voting is still going on in some areas and reports from some areas are still to come.

Addressing the media, State Election Commissioner HN Bora said: “We’ve out the turnout at 72 per cent. However, we expect it to rise up to 80 per cent as reports from some areas are still to come. Moreover, polling will continue till night in some polling stations. So far, Dhubri has registered the highest polling with a voters’ turnout of 86 per cent, followed by South Salmara-Mankachar with 80 per cent. North Salmara subdivision has registered the lowest turnout of 65 per cent. According to information received so far, there will be repoll in seven to eight polling stations in Cachar, six to eight polling stations in Karimganj may be in one in Nalbari. All decisions on repoll will be taken tonight. The repoll will be on December 11.”

On security of strong rooms and counting centres, Bora said: “It’s on a par with the security protocol meant for Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. All strong rooms and counting centres will be under CCTV surveillance. The counting to start at 8 am on December 12 will take 12-16 hours.”

The fate of 35,056 candidates in fray in this phase of the poll are concealed in ballot boxes.

Most of the incidents, including snatching of ballot boxes, keep coming from the Barak Valley.
