Incidents of Islamic Terrorism Threads to Assam Now, Intel says Pakistani Terror Outfits Active in State

Guwahati: While incidents related to Islamic Terrorism and activities of banned Islamic Terror Outfits are being reported on a regular basis from the entire country, Assam is also becoming a hot-bed to the radicalization of Islam for the sake of terror operations.

If ground reports and internal inquiries been made public by the internal departments are to be believed, there is an active thread of known international linkages like the Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Tayiba in the state that have been busy heating up stones on the pertaining issues of Rohingya Muslims and NRC in Assam.

More recently, the arrest of an International terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen operative identified as Qamer uz Zaman who originally hailing from Assam has led investigators and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) sleuths to investigate on a pan-India network of the outfit.

It may be mentioned that Zaman was arrested at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was suspected to have plotted a bomb blast at a temple. However further investigation led the arrest of three more operatives of the Hizbul from Hojai in Assam.

Initial interrogation has revealed that all those accused who have been arrested during this operation were working closely with each other were actively involved in recruiting of more operatives in their outfit. They confessed that these persons were given as little as Rs 30,000 to undertake a recruitment drive in Assam, which is volatile considering a large number of radical Islamic groups that operate over there.

A senior official of the Assam Police has informed that over the years, due to issues pertaining to the minority groups, it has become a hotbed for radical Islamic groups to brainwash these youth into terrorist activity under the veil of radicalized views of the Islam.

Going by the geographic location of Assam and the North East, it serves as a strategic place and this is the reason that most terror outfits prefer this state as it shares a long international border with Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Bhutan.

Over the last decade, several Islamic terror groups including Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam, Muslim Liberation Tigers of Assam, People's United Liberation Front and the Islamic Liberation Army of Assam have been formed with international aids and these are active here and operate in close coordination with its international handlers.

The police sources further informed that these locally operating terror outfits have been successful in building up solid networks both within and borders of the state.

These coordinated terror networks have also been able to breach the border fencings and over a period of time brought in several thousands of illegal immigrants into the state. Bringing in the illegal immigrants has served their purpose on several fronts. A few political parties have over the years used them as a vote bank while the others have been embedded into the terror network.

A special ATS team from the Uttar Police that has landed in Assam is a pointer to the fact that the law enforcement department is leaving no stones unturned in order to incapacitate the rising advances of Islamic Terror that are being constantly funded by the International operatives including Pakistan’s Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiyaba.
