A player must keep learning: PV Sindhu

GUWAHATI: The transition period from junior to senior is a very crucial period in a player’s career and he or she must work hard and keep learning to sustain the pressure at the senior level, feels star shuttler of India PV Sindhu.

The Olympic silver medallist is in the city in connection with the Senior National Badminton Championship where she will start her campaign tomorrow. The Andhra Pradesh shuttler is seeded one in the women’s singles category.

Sindhu and other star performers of the meet like Saina Nehwal, P Kashyap, Sameer Verma and S Praneeth today reached the city. Later, many of them, including Sindhu, had a light training session at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium.

Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of her training session, Sindhu said, “The transition period is very crucial for a player. There are huge differences in the level of competition between junior and senior categories. One player may be good in juniors but to establish oneself in the senior category, the player needs to work very hard setting some specific goals. I also feel a player must keep learning everyday which I do.”

Commenting on the future of badminton in the county she said, “It’s good. Now there are many quality players in the junior category from different parts of the country. In Assam, you have Ashmita Chaliha; a young and talented shuttler.”

On the draw in the All England Championship, where both she and Saina Nehwal have been handed a tricky draw, Sindhu said, “In the world category, there is hardly any difference between the first 20 ranked players. It depends how you play on match day. I will try my best to stay focus from the first round of the championship.”
