A Sneak-Peak into Assam's 'Golden' Girl Hima Das' Life

Hima Das, the daughter of a rice farmer from Dhing village in Nagaon district created world history in IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships. She has become the sensation for the country overnight. She broke the world record for 400 meter final in 51.46 seconds and achieved Gold at a global event.

Hima started slow on the starting block but her blazing run in the final 80m let her win the title. Hima's coach Nipon Das said he wasn’t worried when she slow down among the top three at the final curve. Hima's mother said on her success that her daughter always had set high goals and worked hard to achieve it. Hima used to practice in rice fields of her father and is the youngest of five children of a rice farmer Ronjit Das and Jomali Das, who had no intention of being an athlete till 2016. Interestingly, it has been only two years that she took her racing career seriously.

She also performed better in her past records. She already has a U-20 record in Commonwealth games in Gold coast while clocking it in 51.32 seconds in a 400 mts race, but unfortunately just 1.17 seconds behind the gold medalist Amantle Montsho from Botswana.

She won National State Championships by clocking 51.13 seconds in Guwahati. In fact she is the first as no Indian woman ever won gold medal in World Championship in any category.

The government of Assam has decided to make Hima Das the brand ambassador for sports to inspire the budding players of Assam to aim big and the young generation to take up sports seriously. The Government will also organize a felicitation ceremony to congratulate her. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced to offer a cash reward to Hima Das for bringing laurels to the state at a global event.

As the news spread like wild fire, well-wishers and neighbours flooded Hima's residence at Dhing and many celebrities, well known figures congratulated her on social media platforms for her outstanding achievement.

From a humble farmer's daughter to a world record holder, Hima's life is worth inspiring every youth of the nation that with determination and hard work, nothing is an unachievable feat.
