A Tribute To Probodh Chandra Barkakoty

My grandfather Late Probodh Chandra Barkakoty was born on July 6, 1924 into an illustrious tea planters’ family. After doing his schooling from Jorhat and graduating from Cotton College, he earned his L.L.B. from Gauhati University.

Post that, his family gave him the responsibility of managing their family tea estate, Nahorbari T.E. at Golaghat, alongwith his uncle (Khura). Nahorbari T.E. was set up by his grandfather Nandalal Borkakoty, who was the son of Sarbananda Borkakoty - one of the pioneer Indian tea planters during British era. Simultaneously my grandfather also registered himself as a lawyer of Golaghat Bar Association. Later, after his uncle passed away, he managed Nahorbari T.E. for about 30 years.

Eventually, by virtue of family partition, he inherited Nandapur and Mahalaxmi tea estates. He had been an Executive Committee member of Assam Tea Planters’ Association (ATPA) for many decades. He was one of the founder members and a chairman of North Eastern Tea Association (NETA).

My grandfather took the initiative of setting up a law college in Golaghat and was the founder principal of Golaghat Law College; which he served in an honorary capacity. He was an enthusiastic amateur actor and acted in many plays and theatres. Alongside, he was a chartered member and secretary of Lions Club of Golaghat. He was the founder Secretary of Golaghat Cine Club and a former vice president of United Chamber of Commerce Golaghat. Additionally, he was in the governing body of multiple educational institutions.

My grandfather was a very loving and kind-hearted person, expressing his affection towards everyone. He was fortunate to have spent 62 years of married life with his wife Anjali Barkakoty. A person with great humor, wit and wisdom, his children and grand children were very close and dear to him. He passed away on February 10, 2019, at the age of 95. On this day of his Adya Shraddha, we pray to the Almighty for his eternal peace.
