AASU demands steps to check smuggling of forest resources

A Correspondent

Joysagar: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Sivasagar district and Amguri regional committees have expressed concern over the ongoing open smuggling of forest resources in and around Sivasagar district and the student organization has urged the administrations to take bold steps in countering these activities of smugglers.

The AASU leaders have alleged that a powerful group of illegal businessmen and anti-social elements is active in the district and this group is involved in illegal trade of forest resources. These smugglers illegally dig the river banks and collect sand, soil and stone without paying due revenue to the government. They dig the banks of the Jhanji River, the Dikhow River and also the Desang and Dehing rivers regularly. Due to this, the river banks are getting damaged and the problem of erosion has increased.

The Sivasagar AASU leaders submitted separate memoranda to the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner and also to the Sivasagar DFO on Friday and sought strict action against smugglers.
