AASU stages hunger strike across State for free textbooks

UDALGURI: The Harisinga Anchalik unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a hunger strike at Harisinga to press the government to supply textbooks to the schools.

 Dibyajyoti Bayan, the president, Bikash Sarma, the vice-president, Jitul Ojha, the general secretary and Chinmay Das, the organizing secretary of Harisinga Anchalik unit, among others staged the hunger strike from 6 am to 4 pm. The students’ union has been demanding immediate supply of textbooks to the students.

Duliajan : Duliajan Regiol Unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a 10-hour hunger strike from 6 am on Saturday in protest against the State Government’s failure to supply free textbooks to students even after 45 days of the start of new academic session.

While expressing serious resentment, the AASU organizing secretary Anil Gogoi stated that they would not hesitate to intensify the agitation if the State Government failed to supply free textbooks soon.

All Dibrugarh District Students’ Union president, Likhon Baruah, amongst others, also participated in the hunger strike.

BATADRAVA, Feb 18:  Activists of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) units of Batadrava, Raidongia, Hatichung, Silpukhuri and Dhing on Saturday staged hunger strike demanding immediate distribution of textbooks in the schools.

Almost one-and-half month has passed since the start of the new academic year but the students have not yet received their textbooks supplied by the government. Over 500 activists of  Batadrava, Raidongia, Hatichung, Silpukhuri and Dhing units of AASU staged hunger strike at Batadrava, Raidongia Pashali, Jajori market place, Gakhajua Chariali and in Dhing, pressurizing the government to immediately supply textbooks.

The participating AASU leaders warned the government and State Education Minister not to downplay the issues involving students. The agitating students also said if the government refused to listen to their voice of protest, they were well prepared to mount more pressure.

 PATHSALA: Pathsala Anchalik Students’ union staged a hunger strike in protest against the failure of the State Government to supply of free textbook to students even after 45 academic days of the year. The student body demanded supply of textbooks at the earliest. More than 100 AASU activists staged hunger strike at Pathsala.

JOYSAGAR : Sivasagar district AASU unit staged a protest demanding immediate supply of textbooks to the students of the district in front of the DC’s office here. They also criticized the role played by government authorities in this serious matter where the future of students was at stake.

DHEKIAJULI :  The Dhekiajuli unit of AASU observed a 10-hour hunger strike from 6 am to 4 pm in protest against the State Government’s ibility to supply the free textbooks to school students so far. 

 The AASU activists, led by Dhekiajuli unit AASU president Shankar Das and secretary Nihal Das, observed 10-hour hunger strike in  Dhekiajuli near the NH-15. The agitation programme of AASU was supported by all sections of people.

TANGLA: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a hunger strike near North Darrang Jr. College of Tangla.

 The Tangla regiol unit members of the students’ body staged a 10-hour long hunger strike against the gross irregularities in supply of textbooks to the students. The demonstration was also joined by AASU leaders Jayanta Kr. Bhattacharya and Saiful Haque.

Talking to media persons, Bhattacharya said that the failure to distribute textbooks on time was blatant infringement of the right to education. He exhorted the government to take necessary measures to resolve the issue at the earliest.
