STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 11: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), in a letter written to the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday, insisted on punishing the police personnel involved with the illegal detention of Anna Bala Ray by conducting a high level inquiry.

Anna Bala Ray, (40), a resident of Pub Ankorbari in Chirang district was arrested and sent to a detention camp in Kokrajhar on June 23 after being declared a foreigner by a foreigners’ tribunal. However, she was released later.

In the letter AASU President Dipanka Kumar Nath and General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that the arrest of Anna Bala Ray has shaken the entire state. “The brutal dragging and her subsequent arrest made by the police on the pretext of verdict made by the Foreigners’ Tribunal were quite painful. Such conduct of the police personnel is not acceptable and,” the duo said. Stating that she was identified as a genuine Indian citizen at the very next day of her arrest, the duo said, “Without ascertaining the facts, the arrest of the Anna Bala is condemnable. Hence, it raises a question of trust upon the Foreigner’s Tribunal.”
