AC Bus Shelter: Heaven or Hell

GUWAHATI: Two air-conditioned bus shelters have recently been inaugurated in the city by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The bus shelters at Bora Service and Panbazar have raised more eyebrows than actually help cater to the public.

The bus shelters have been designed in a manner that makes it unappealing as it is not “aesthetically designed”. It will not serve the actual purpose for which it was built, some Guwahatians speculated.

The shelters were inaugurated on November 28 on which Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Councilor, Rajkumar Tewari remarked, “I do not think it will serve the purpose for which it was built. Rather, it will be a cozy spot for couples and unemployed youths to waste their valuable time. It will also attract hooligans and might lead to the occurrence of un-necessary action. Instead of building such shelters, GMC should look into matters of more pressing need like improving road conditions, installing streetlights and ensuring water supply.

It has been observed that the shelters look more like closed rooms rather than true bus shelters. “It will be difficult for people to make their way out of the AC shelters as it is very narrow. It is designed to sit fifteen people; however, the ones at the back will find it hard to make their way out of the shelter”, the councilor remarked.
