Itanagar, Aug 1: The dream of a medical college in Arunachal Pradesh has turned into a reality today with the induction of the first batch of students of Tomo Riba Institute of Medical Sciences (TRIMHS) at Naharlagun, near here. Chief Minister Pema Khandu handed over the medical seat allocation letters to the first batch of 39 students of total 50 during a function marking the beginning of the academic session of the first medical college in the state.

Khandu in his address lauded the Medical Council of India (MCI) president Prof Jayshree Mehta, administrative & grievances committee chairman Prof Ajay and secretary Dr Reena Nayar, Union Health Ministry senior regional director Dr P J Gogoi, TRIMHS director Dr Moji Jini and dean Prof J Jaykumar, for their enduring efforts to achieve the success. He underscored the importance of ‘Team Arunachal’ cutting across party line for all round development of the state with strong political will power.

“Many doctors have been recruited by APPSC which would be posted across the state as part of streamlining and decentralisation process of health sector,” the chief minister said.

“It is a dream come true,” Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said adding, TRIMHS’s birth is after a long struggle but a tribute to pioneer leader late Tomo Riba, former chief minister of the state after whom the hospital and medical college has been named.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Alo Libang thanked MCI team for making TRIMHS a reality but urged the council to increase the seats from 50 to 100 soon but till then grant the central quota to this remote state.

Applauding the dedication of ‘Arunachal Team’ led by Khandu, Prof Mehta said that TRIMHS will become one of the best medical colleges. The selection of 27 girls reflected women emancipation due to good governance, she said, adding “Snatch away 100 seats from MCI,” she told Libang, adding “be ethical and professional to set example for the country to emulate and rest would follow”.

This marks a turning point in state’s history by sowing healthy seeds for a healthy tomorrow, chief secretary Satya Gopal said, adding the institution would not have seen the day of light today had the chief minister and his deputy have not sanctioned funds to meet the gap funding.
