FROM OUR Special Correspondent

SILCHAR, April 20: On the first death anniversary of Anup Choudhury, All Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) called a memorial meeting in order to pay homage to its founder member, subsequently its general secretary and advisor. Till his death, as the members present who included Rupam ndi Purkayastha, president of the Association, leading jourlist Paritosh Paul Choudhury, educationist Niranjan Dutta, advocates, Soumitra th, Siddhartha Sen Gupta and Dibakar Bhattacharjee, chairman PNC Haran Dey and others said Anup Choudhury, a well known advocate and social worker, was associated with various social, cultural and trade union bodies.

His association with ACKHSA, earlier known as All Cachar Students’ Association, as Cachar was then undivided had been quite eventful. He was on the forefront of the movement launched by the Association for the establishment of a Central University here. It was the result of long drawn agitation by ACKHSA that Assam University came into existence in 1994. He died at the age of 50 which came as a bolt from the blue. It was something unexpected because he fell suddenly ill and did not respond to medical treatment at a nursing home here. His death was today recalled with great pain and all the members paying their profound tributes admitted that his dymism and leadership in times of need was unique and would remain as a source of inspiration to the present generation of young boys and girls. He was also a member of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre.
