Action taken against policeman in Tangla

TANGLA: In a bizarre incident, a photograph of a police constable holding a placard which read ‘NDFB long live’ has caught everyone’s attention and has gone viral on social media. The incident has embarrassed the police department as NDFB is a proscribed rebel outfit which was involved in the October 30, 2008 blasts and various anti-government activities.

According to information, the constable, who has been identified as Lakhyadhar Deka, was on duty at the protest programme in Udalguri town on Tuesday. The protest was held under the aegis of the Bodo Women Justice Forum, Bodo People’s Committee for Peace Initiative (BPCPI) and the Society for Indigenous People’s Rights (SIPR) where thousands of protesters demanded release of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) chairman Ranjan Daimari.

NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimari was sentenced to life imprisonment by the special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently as he was found guilty in the October 30, 2008 serial bomb blasts in the State. It seems that out of excitement, the police constable draped a traditional Bodo aronai around his neck and took hold of a placard from one of the protesters.

Meanwhile, Udalguri police have taken up the matter seriously and the constable is being interrogated at Udalguri Police Station. “We’ve already initiated departmental and legal action in this regard,” Udalguri Superintendent of Police Longnit Terang told The Sentinel.
