GUWAHATI, June 10:With less than 48 hours left for the Annual General Meeting of the Assam Cricket Association to be held at the Barsapara cricket stadium, there is no clarity yet on the candidates for different posts of the sports body, barring the post of president.

Senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed interest in becoming the president of the association after a section of former cricketers requested him to take the chair for the interest of cricket in the State.

Till this evening, there was no second candidate for the post and it is expected that Sarma, unless he withdraws from the race, will become the new president of the Assam Cricket Association on Sunday without facing any contest. However, the case is not the same for the other posts which included vice presidents, joint secretaries, assistant secretaries and treasurer. Many candidates are in the fray for those posts and lots of lobbying were going on throughout the day in different quarters to filize the me of the candidates.

However, in a new twist there were indications today that the new committee may be constituted without elections.

On condition of anonymity, a source in the association, who himself is a candidate for the post of joint secretary, said, “It is almost confirmed that Himanta Biswa Sarma will be our new president. Sarma himself feels that it is better to constitute a committee avoiding election so that after the end of the meeting there is no bad feeling among the members and all can work together for the development of cricket in the State."

If that happens, it will be very interesting to see the results.

There are already two candidates for the post of general secretary - Ajoy Sarma and Brojen Gohain. Another me -Pradip Buragohain - is also doing the rounds. However, Buragohain’s close associates claimed that he is not interested though he has received good support from a section of the association. For the six vice president posts, seven mes are doing the rounds  - Rakibul Hussain, Babul Hore, Ramen Dutta, Jayanta Malla Barua, Debojit Saikia, Jamshed Khan and Rani rah. There will be three candidates for the treasurer post - Anil Bora, Manindra th Saikia (a likely candidate for the secretary post too) and Abdul Khaleq.
