AGP to ask Centre to reconsider move

Guwahati, June 30: In the face of public outcry over the Central government’s decision to privatize 12 oilfields in the State, the Asom Ga Parishad, a partner in the BJP-led State government, today decided to urge the Centre to reconsider the decision.

The issue domited the AGP’s steering committee meeting held at party headquarters today.

The members felt that the move to lease out the oilfields were “not in the interest” of the people of the State.

“There have been a lot of bad repercussions over the move. We have discussed the issue. It is a sensitive one. The then Congress government had also made manoeuvres to hand over the oilfields to private parties. We had opposed the move even then. We will now make an appeal to the Central government to reconsider the decision,” AGP MLA Ramendra rayan Kalita said.

The steering committee also pressed for expediting implementation of the Assam Accord and detection and deportation of foreigners on its basis.

The AGP also stressed upon the need for a coordition committee of alliance partners in the State government and framing of a common minimum programme.
