AGP To Meet PM Narendra Modi And CM Sarbananda Sonowal on Bill Again

GUWAHATI: The AGP is going to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal again on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 soon.

The regional party had a discussion on Thursday on the Bill and the Centre’s move to form a high-level committee for implementation of Clause 6 and of the Assam Accord.

Talking to the media after the meeting, AGP president Atul Bora said: “Time and again we’ve made our stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 clear. We’ve opposed the Bill by taking to the streets with slogans and by holding protests in New Delhi when the JPC meeting was underway there.

Against the Bill we met the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the JPC chairman. We’ve also let all concerned know that we’re going to fight against the Bill till the end. Since we’re an ally of the BJP-led government in Assam, we’re going to meet Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Bill yet again.”

On the decision of the Union Cabinet for the formation of a high-level committee for implementation of the Assam Accord, Bora said: “We’re not assured of the Centre’s move. Implementation of the Assam Accord is all important. Constitutional safeguard for the indigenous people of Assam as promised in the Assam Accord is what the AGP wants. We also want according ST status to the six ethnic groups of the State.”
