‘Agriculture college, university sign board creates confusion’

SHILLONG, July 1: Meghalaya Minister of Agriculture Banteidor Lyngdoh, has instructed the concern departments take down the signboard of the College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (Imphal) which is at present under construction at Kyrdemkulai, Ri Bhoi District.

“Even as the construction of the college is in progress, however, as a Minister I need to get clarification because in the signboard it is written as college and in the second part university and there had been discussion with the Central government that this institution should be the Central Agriculture University in Meghalaya and not a college,” Lyngdoh told The Sentinel after he had earlier inspected the progress of the construction of the institute.

“We came to understand later after a few officers and directors of the agriculture department had inspected the area and we came to know that it was not a university but a college,” he said.

Lyngdoh said the state government will soon take up the matter with the central government to get a clear picture and make sure whether the institution is a college or university. When asked, he also informed that the government had given around 200 acre of land for the construction of the institute. “In the signboard it’s written both College and University hence the confusion and because of this the government has to take up the matter with the Centre to get clarity,” he said. He also informed that the institute will probably be completed by next year.
