AIMSS demands security, equal rights for women

 From Our Correspondent

Silchar, March 9: All India Mahila Samskritik Sanghatan (AIMSS) took out a rally which moved through the main thoroughfares of the town and later assembled in front of the Khudiram statue here today as part of the observance of Intertiol Women’s Day that falls on March 8. Hundreds of women from all walks of life participated in the rally with banners and posters, demanding adequate safety and security to the women in the country.

AIMSS called off the observance of Intertiol Women’s Day yesterday due to 12-hour Barak bandh called by various organisations against the murder of Farid Khan. While addressing the gathering, Dulali Ganguli, general secretary of the AIMSS, Cachar district unit, held capitalism responsible for the growing rate of crime against women. She said that there were numerous laws in the country which hardly got implemented on the ground. It was her opinion that the violence against women had been increasing with passage of time and the government had completely failed to ensure the safety of women.

She said, “Capitalist class is responsible for the violence against women. The country is now domited by a group of capitalists who have been exploiting the women as well as men for their vested interest which has created a divide in the society. It was witnessed that the rate of crime against women was very minimal in socialist countries like USSR, North Korea.” She pointed out that a woman should enjoy equal rights and opportunities to that of man in every society.

She said that the government had failed to take the responsibility to ensure safety to women which she termed as “very unfortute.” She expressed her concern over the portrayal of women in media. Venting her ire at the media for airing “obscene” films, serials and advertisements in different channels, she requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take action against those broadcasters.

It is pertinent to mention here that the crime against women has been rapidly increasing in the country. This year’s theme for Intertiol Women’s Day is “Make It Happen”. The United tions began celebrating Intertiol Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8 during Intertiol Women’s Year 1975.
