AIUDF To Be King Maker in Darrang Zila Parishad

MANGALDAI: Though in the re-checking process of counting of votes for Duni-Dipila constituency of Darrang Zila Parishad on the night of December 14, BJP candidate Jayashree Deka won by defeating Congress candidate Kanika Baishya by a margin of 199 votes, yet the BJP failed to get the magic number seat of 8 in the 14-member Darrang Zila Parishad.

The BJP had to be content with six seats only (Duni-Dipila, Lakhimpur-Tengabari, Rangamati, Chapai, Sipajhar-Debananda and Deomornoi-Patharighat) while the Congress bagged five seats (Dhula, Shyampur, Lalpul, Mowamari-Puthimari and Kuruwa-Dumunichowki constituency). The AIUDF bagged two seats (Besimari and Bihudiya) as the Congress-turned Independent candidate Humayun Kabir claimed the Shyamtila constituency. Significantly, in Darrang district, once known as the stronghold of AGP, miserably failed to make its presence felt only due to the poor performance of its district-level leaders.

On the other hand, out of total 750 ward members of 75 Gaon Panchayats, the BJP claimed 246, Congress 221, AIUDF 54, AGP 34, BPF 16 and Independent candidate won 127 seats. In the election for 75 Gaon Panchayat presidents, the BJP got only 28 while Congress won 31 seats, AGP 3, AIUDF 12 and Independent 1 seat. Similarly, both the BJP and Congress bagged 31 each seats of 75 Anchalik Panchayat members, AGP 1, AIUDF 9 while Independent bagged 2 seats only.

With this result the Congress is likely to grab the Zila Parishad with the support from AIUDF and the Congress turned Independent candidate.

However, the AIUDF is going to play the role of king maker as last year the AIUDF formed the Zila Parishad with the support of both the AGP candidates. Significantly, in the election for Bihudiya ZPC, which was known as the stronghold of Congress legislator of Dalgaon LAC, Illias Ali, AIUDF candidate Sajida Parbeen, wife of

progressive ideal farmer Moinuddin Ahmed, came out victorious.
