All Assam Amateur Caddies Golf Tournament In Jorhat

JORHAT: Jorhat Gymkhana Club Golf Course, which is the second oldest Golf Course established outside the United Kingdom (Estb -1876), will host the inaugural All Assam Amateur Caddies Golf Tournament on Sunday.

This event, which will be organised in association with ONGC (Jorhat ), Tea -Vision ( Kolkata) and 41 Sub Area (Army- Jorhat) is to encourage the underprivileged young golfing helpers/partners (caddies) and their dependents of different Golf Clubs of Assam

Assam has 2(two) 18 hole and nearly 12 odd 9 hole golf courses (of colonial era) where golf is played regularly by the club members and the caddies are an integral part in the sport. Though all the clubs do their bit to encourage these caddies to adopt the game, but till now there was no platform for these caddies to showcase their talent and get opportunity to perform a higher level. The purpose of this tournament is to provide that missing platform to this hidden talent.

Representatives from Digboi, Doomdooma, Dibrugarh, Zaloni (Duliaj an). Solmara (Tezpur), Biswanath. Seleng, Misa, Rhino (Guwahati), Jorhat Gymkhana Club - a total of nearly 50 golfers are expected to participate in this one day tourney at Jorhat Gymkhana Club Course. There will four categories viz. Gross/ Nett./ Stableford and Bogey competitions with handsome incentives for Winners and Runner Ups in each category besides awarding one time stipend to all participants.

This laudable initiative is possible due to active support from ONGC Jorhat, Tea Vision. 41 Sub Area and Jorhat Gymkhana Club and is first of its kind to find and locate hidden talents amongst the budding golfers who will be encouraged to take up this game professionally. Such hidden talents, if proper support is made available, may one day be able to represent the state and the country in various national and international forums including Olympics. Golf has been included as yet another sport in Olympics now.

It is a well known fact that such talents, other than from this region, have been representing state and the country in various Professional and Amateur Golf Tournaments all over the world and have excelled as well and with that view in mind, TEA VISION intends to invite 4 (four) top golfers from this tournament to represent Assam in the Eastern / All India Caddies Competition to be held in Kolkata later this year.

Jorhat Gymkhana Club is also proposing to establish a” Flood lit Driving Range” for all budding young golfers of this neighbourhood and are looking for likeminded partners /sponsors in this regard.
