All Assam Tribal Sangha Challenged on Caste Certificate Issue

Guwahati: The competence of the All Assam Tribal Sangha in the matter of issuance of caste/ Tribe certificate is being challenged in the Guwahati High Court. It has been submitted by the petitioners that “so far as Assam is concerned, caste certificate pertaining to Scheduled Tribe is issued by All Assam Tribal Sangha and countersigned by the revenue official, such as, Deputy Commissioner or Sub-Dibisional Officer (Civil). However, the contention is that All Assam Tribal Sangha has no competence to issue caste. Tribe certificate, being a private body.” The High Court has issued notice on the writ petition as well as on the prayer for stay, returnable two weeks.
