Amazon Faces Backlash For Selling Products With The Images of Hindu Gods

Guwahati: Amazon, one of the largest online shopping stores faced a social media backlash in India after they were spotted of selling toilet seat covers and other items with images of Hindu Gods in the U.S retailer’s website, making BoycottAmazon the country’s top trending topic on Twitter.

On Thursday, thousands of Twitter users called for the boycott of the online shopping retailer Amazon with some tagging of Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and urging her to take action against the world’s biggest online retailer.

Meanwhile, Amazon did not immediately respond to comment on the issue.

Earlier in an incident in 2017, New Delhi took the Seattle, Washington-based company to task after its Canadian website was spotted selling doormats resembling India’s Flag.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, at the time threatened to rescind visas of Amazon employees if the doormats were not removed from its site.

It has now been found that several listings of toilet seat covers, yoga mats, sneakers, rugs and other items depicting Hindu Gods or sacred Hindu symbols have been seen in the U.S. website of Amazon for which the social media has backlashed the online retailer.

It has been reported that some of the items were no longer available in the website for purchase, suggesting that the online shopping retailer may have been withdrawing some of the items as it did in 2017.

A film trade analyst, Sumit Kandel tweeted on the selling of items which have images of Hindu Gods by Amazon said, “Until you hit Hinduphobics Business hard they will keep on insulting your Gods, your beliefs and your entire civilization.”

The largest online store said that they have removed the products from its online store. In a statement issued by Amazon, it said, “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account.”
