Anti-alcohol protest in Golaghat

Golaghat(Dhekial), June 3: Demonstrators took to the streets here on today to call for a ban on the sale of alcohol. The activists of Mad Mukta Axom Dabi Samitee, Golaghat district committee staged a sit-in protest near Deputy Commissioner’s office here deeding complete ban on the sale of alcohol.

Prabin Das, an office-bearer of the organization talking to the mediaperson said that the easy availability of liquor in the rural areas have badly affected the village people.

“In rural areas country liquor (sulai) is available even in a small paan shop,” Das said.

He alleged that increase in alcohol consumption had led to increase in crimes like rape, theft and robbery. The protesters demanded action against the sale of country liquor in Golaghat district. More than 300 people took part in the protest demonstration. They also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat.
