Hailakandi: 246 star mark holders of HSLC, AHM and FM examinations 2018 were awarded with laptops under the Anundoram Borooah Award Scheme in Hailakandi district on Wednesday.

In a function organised by the district administration at Rabindra Bhawan here, altogether 246 students from 52 Government, provincialised, private schools and madrassas were given away laptops by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ruth Lienthang, local MLA, Anwar Hussain Laskar, Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha and other officials and dignitaries.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Lienthang urged the students to pursue their studies with devotion, dedication and determination to bring laurels to themselves and the nation as a whole. Addressing the students and parents, MLA Hussain said the students are the leaders of tomorrow and the future of the country lies with them.

With 24 awardees each St. Mary’s School and Blue Flowers English Medium School topped the list among the private schools followed by Royal High School with 14 awardees. Cambridge High School and Talent High School followed closely with 13 awardees each.

There were a total of 88 awardees from Government provincialised schools. With 11 awardees, Public Higher Secondary School topped the list among the Government provincialised schools followed by NT Model School with 9 awardees.

The scheme named after the first civilian ICS from Assam, Anundoram Borooah, was conceptualised by the erstwhile government in 2005 under which laptops were given to those who secured 60 per cent and above marks. Even tablets were given to second division holders in 2015. However, the present government redesigned the scheme and set star marks (75 per cent and above) and distinction marks (80 per cent and above) holders eligible to receive laptops. Surveys conducted say the award led to enhancement of the social standing of students and their families.
