APCC to launch state wide torch light march against Citizenship Bill on January 7

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) to launch a statewide torchlight march with the slogan “Jagao Assam, Bachao Assam” against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 and violation of the Assam Accord on January 7, 2019.

It is to be noted that the decision to approve the Bill was taken by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on December 31, 2018, last year. Moreover, the bill will be tabled in the Parliament on January 7, thus, opposing this APCC on Saturday decided to hold the torch march from evening 5 pm to 7 pm in every nooks and corner of the state on the above-mentioned date.

APCC in a press statement also stated that apart from Guwahati Pradesh Congress Kendra, the torch march will be carried out in various district Congress Committee including Block level Congress Committee.

In order to protect Assam and the Assamese Society, APCC, President, Ripun Borah had urged all the sections of the people to join in the torch march on January 7.

It may also be mentioned that the Northeast Students Organisation (NESO) consisting of All Assam Students’ Union, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF) calls for 11 NE bandh on January 8 (5am to 4pm).

As per a press statement, NESO clearly stated that the group vehemently opposes the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.

Addressing a press conference at The Hotel Prag Continental on Saturday, NESO members condemned the statement of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stand on the Citizenship Bill in Cachar on Friday.

It may be mentioned that PM Modi in a public rally in Kalinagar near Silchar during an election campaign stated that the Government of India is hoping for the final clearance of the amendment of the proposed Citizenship Bill, 2016 in Parliament.

It may further be mentioned that ‘Save Assam’ movement had been launched by a group of conscious citizens and distinguished intellectuals of Assam against the Bill.
