'Archie' Will One Day Come to Bollywood: Comics CEO John Goldwater

Guwahati: The most favourite and popular comic character of the world 'Archie' that everyone has gone through atleast in their childhood days, will soon have a Bollywood-style movie. The comics CEO and publisher John Goldwater announces this through email to news agencies.

The comic was first introduced in 1940s, wherein, Archie Andrews and his friends Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge were the characters of a different generation, from the Riverdale High School. After serving the reading interests of several generations of youths, they are anything but retro. Archie Comics CEO and publisher John Goldwater said that Riverdale is a city that exists today.

The comic has been published in over 17 languages in more than 55 countries, including India. Their merchandise is licensed by Animation International India.

During an interview with news agencies, the CEO was asked, whether the addition of characters like Kevin Keller (a gay character), Valerie (African-American), Raj Patel (Indian-American) and Harper (a disabled teen) will make the comics more relevant today? In his reply, he said that Definitely. One of his first moves as CEO of the company was to pull the brand out of its ‘retro’ vibe. He doesn't want the comic to read like something that happened in the 50s.

He added that 'Riverdale', as far as he was concerned, is a city that exists even today. That means the people populating the town have to feel like today’s world. That means diversity. That means a bit more conflict and real-world drama.

He further added that all these characters are relevant. The new ones, whoever come next will be relevant. In order to expand Archie, it has to expand with diversification and engagement with the modern world to stay relevant. This is something he is very much mindful about it. Thus,' explaining why Archie Comics will have a Bollywood-style movie.

Moreover, Goldwater added that there is also an audience in India and there is a hunger for new takes on these characters in a different versions.

Sources said that this is a perfect match! The idea of Archie in Bollywood is the kind of thing you hear and just say, ‘Yes, we have to do that’.

Regarding the progress in the film, Goldwater said that they were in the early days. It is a hugely exciting idea. They feel themselves lucky to be partnering with such a wonderful team at Graphic India, as the Archie characters are insanely popular especially in India. So it’s a long overdue and they can’t wait to share more with our amazing fans.
