Army ordince team to conduct test

From Our Correspondent

Itagar, Feb 24:  Secunderabad-based Army Ordince Core team - ik subedar S Dev Kumar and ik Ramakrish Rao - is on a mission to hunt probable weightlifters to train them for India. The duo conducted physical test of kids within 14-year of age on third such mission as five Aruchlees selected during 2015 and 2016 are undergoing training at Secunderabad now.

They conducted the test assisted by Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) vice president Abrham K Techi, Aruchal Weightlifting Association (AWA) general secretary Daniel Teli, media partner Pradeep Kumar and SAI coach D D Sharma in Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, harlagun.

Such test will be conducted at Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy here tomorrow, Techi said, adding they have arrived here at the invitation of AWA.

Services Sports Control Board secretary general wing commander Deepak Ahulwalia honouring Aruchal Olympic Association (AOA) request has consented to send an IAF team in April next for talent hunt, said Techi, also AOA secretary general.

Olympic medal will remain a dream for Aruachalees as there is neither any weightlifting coach nor the state Govt is extending any support despite repeated pleas. The IWF global coaches during tiol championships at Nirjuli in 2011 were impressed with Aruchalee weightlifters and had pinned all hopes on them to win Olympic medals for India, Techi said, adding the AOA has been doing the job of the state government.

The state government should realise that sports associations and unions develop the players not the sports department, which fails to utilise Govt fund for which it is meant, Techi said without mincing any words.

“We have come to a point of no return after winning global and tiol weightlifting medals. We have to try all possible ways to prove our mettle not to let India down,” Techi said with conviction.

The state government is engaged in honouring medal winners trained by army coaches at the initiative of AWA, Techi said while Teli recalled the talent hunt by Pune-based Army Sports School at the initiative of  then governor Gen (Retd) J J Singh.

However, he resented at the apathetic attitude of the state Govt in extending support by appointing coaches and offering fincial help to hone up inherent talents.
