Arrested persons from Huhuapara along the Assam-Meghalaya border released by Assam Police

Shillong: Three people who were arrested by the Assam Police from the disputed Huhuapara along the Assam-Meghalaya border were released on the intervention of the West Khasi Hills district administration on Tuesday night. The area is located just in the fringe of the border where both the sides are staking claim.

Confirming the arrest and the subsequent release of the trio identified as Birlman Marak, Purtis Sangma and Albertert Sangma, Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills district, Bashan Laloo told The Sentinel that the immediate intervention led to the release of the three people. However, the fourth one, identified as Purno A Marak, is still under the custody of the Assam Police for his alleged involvement in a crime registered under Boko Police station.

The genesis started with the local populace owing allegiance to Meghalaya putting signage leading to the waterfall. The waterfall is in the disputed site. The local MLA from Meghalaya was invited to be part of the waterfall carnival, but he refused on grounds that the election model code of conduct is in place. Sources said that the Assam Police acted on that basis and picked up the four youths who were putting up banners and posters throughout the way to the waterfall.

The SP refused to comment further on the developments but he was apt that the residents of the areas within the disputed site should inform the authorities before undertaking any event. This is the third occasion in the past one year where such unpleasant events have taken place in the periphery of the waterfall.
