SHILLONG, April 29: A delegation of the KHADC led by its Chief Executive Member (CEM) Adelbert Nongrum today visited Sadar police station to express their solidarity with the Sordar of Wahkhen village in East Khasi Hills district, who was arrested for alleged violation of an order issued by the Meghalaya High Court last year.

Speaking to newsmen, Nongrum said, “We are regretful that the Sordar has been summoned and arrested just because he was doing his duty of looking after the welfare of the people staying in the village.”  He also said that issuing of a certificate is a traditiol custom and the village heads should not fear or hesitate to issue any such kind of certificate to the people.

“As the CEM of KHADC, I will sit with our friends from the ARPA and discuss this matter which is an act of suppression against our people,” he said.

According to him, the Sordar of Wahkhen village did not steal or kill anyone, but he was exercising his duties towards the daily functioning of the village community.

Meanwhile, the Hynniewtrep Youths Council (HYC) met the Executive Member in-charge Elaka, Pangniang to appeal that the KHADC should immediately chalk out a law which will give power to the traditiol village heads and its Dorbar under the jurisdiction of the District Council.

Speaking to newsmen, P. Lawai, president of the HYC said, “We want to express our sadness with regards to the difficulties faced by the Sordars, traditiol headmen and the Dorbars as a whole for the last few months.”
